ADHD Medication and Shared Care: What You Need to Know

This FAQ explains how you can get ADHD medication and the process we follow for ‘shared care’

Non-urgent advice: How can I get diagnosed with ADHD?

You can be assessed for ADHD through one of the following options:

  • NHS Local Mental Health Team (Note: The current wait time is over 2 years).
  • NHS ‘Right to Choose’ provider.
  • Private referral.

Non-urgent advice: What is shared care, and when can my GP prescribe ADHD medication?

‘Shared care’ is an agreement between the psychiatrist, the patient and the GP, and all parties work together to manage your ADHD medication. Your psychiatrist will ask your GP to prescribe ADHD medication once you are stable on ADHD medication. If you attend 6 month health checks at the practice, the medication will continue to be prescribed by the GP.

  • Your psychiatrist will start your medication, and once you are stable on a suitable dose, your GP can take over prescribing it.

Non-urgent advice: Can you prescribe ADHD medication if I already have a diagnosis from abroad?

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD outside the UK:

  • GPs can only prescribe ADHD medication after your diagnosis has been confirmed by a consultant psychiatrist in the UK who specialises in ADHD, and once you are stable on the medication.
  • You will need to get a referral to a UK psychiatrist, either through the NHS or privately, before your GP can prescribe your medication.

Non-urgent advice: How can I get a referral to ADHD psychiatrist?

  • For a referral to the NHS Local Mental Health Team, please contact us via online consultation on our website, and we will send you the necessary forms.
  • For a referral to an NHS ‘Right to Choose’ provider, you can either contact us via online consultation, or complete the forms from your chosen provider and send them to us.
  • If you choose a private assessment, you can book directly with the clinic (no referral from us needed).

Non-urgent advice: What are the waiting times for ADHD assessments?

  • NHS Local Mental Health Team: The current wait time is over 2 years.
  • NHS ‘Right to Choose’ and Private Referrals may have shorter wait times, depending on the provider.
